Edward Rutter
& Sarah Stokoe
Edward Rutter was born 19 April 1813 in Newburn, Northumberland, England and christened 18 July 1813 at St Michael’s, Newburn, the third child of Joshua Rutter and Jane Jobling.
Edward married Sarah Stokoe (christened 27 May 1812 at St Peter’s and Allenheads Chapelries, Allendale, the daughter of Thomas and Jane Stokoe) in 1838 at St John the Baptist, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland.
Edward, a coal miner, and Sarah were the parents of:
· Jane Rutter born in 1839 in Benwell, Northumberland was the mother of:
· Isabella Rutter born in Newburn and christened 21 October 1860 at St Michael’s, Newburn died at Bank Top, Newburn and was buried on 25 March 1861 at St Michael’s, Newburn, aged 8 months.
· Thomas Stokoe Rutter born in 1842 in Benwell married Margaret Gray in 1862 at St Michael’s, Newburn.
Thomas Stokoe, a coal miner, and Margaret were the parents of:
· Edward Rutter born in Newburn and christened 22 October 1866 at St Michael’s, Newburn;
· John Thomas Rutter born in Newburn in 1869;
· Margaret Jane Rutter born in Newburn in 1871 died in Newburn in Oct-Dec 1874 aged 3 years;
· Sarah Elizabeth Rutter born in Newburn in 1874 died in Newburn in Oct-Dec 1880 aged 6 years;
· James Rutter born in Newburn in 1876;
· Jane Ann Rutter born in Newburn in 1879; and
· William Rutter born in Newburn in 1887.
Thomas Stokoe and Margaret may have had other children but their identity is unknown.
Margaret Rutter nee Gray died in Newburn in 1900, aged 55 years.
Thomas Stokoe died in Newburn in 1911, aged 69 years.
· Joshua Rutter born in 1844 in Benwell married Ellen Christer in 1864 in Hexham RD.
Joshua, a deputy overman in a coal mine, and Ellen were the parents of:
· Sarah Jane Rutter born 1869 in Mickley Square, Northumberland;
· Joshua Rutter born 1876 in Mickley Square;
· Mary Jane Rutter born about 1877 in Mickley Square;
· James Edward Rutter born about February 1881 in Mickley Square;
· Ellen Rutter born 1883 in Mickley Square; and
· Hannah Rutter born 1886 in Mickley Square.
· Mary Ann Rutter born about 1846 in Blaydon, Co. Durham married Richard Lowes in 1863 in Hexham RD.
Mary Ann and Richard, a coal miner, were the parents of:
· Sarah Jane Lowes born in 1866 in Ovingham, Northumberland;
· Edward Ready Lowes born in 1868 in Chester Le Street, Co. Durham;
· James Lowes born in 1876 in Winlaton, Co. Durham; and
· Thomas Lowes born in 1881 in Ryton, Co. Durham.
· Edward Rutter born in Blaydon Haugh, Co. Durham and christened 16 September 1849 at St Cuthbert’s, Stella, Durham married Margaret Purvis in 1870 in Hexham RD.
Edward, a coal miner, and Margaret were the parents of:
· James Edward Rutter born in Throckley, Northumberland about 1870;
· Mary Jane Rutter born in Throckley about 1872;
· Mary Isabella Rutter born in Throckley about 1880; and
· Joshua Rutter born in New Throckley and christened at St Michael’s, Newburn on 4 December 1881.
· George Rutter born about 1852 in Blaydon married Dorothy Robson in 1872 in Chester Le Street RD.
George, a deputy overman in a coal mine, and Dorothy were the parents of:
· Edward Rutter born in Edmondsley, Co. Durham about 1872;
· George Rutter born in Edmondsley, Co. Durham about 1875; and
· Mary Jane Robson Rutter born in Edmondsley about 1878 and christened at Sacriston on 9 June 1878.
· Sarah Rutter born in Newburn Hall and christened 18 May 1859 at St Michael’s, Newburn.
Sarah Rutter nee Stokoe died at Bank Top, Newburn and was buried on 9 March 1861 at St Michael’s, Newburn, aged 49 years.
Edward died in Prudhoe in the parish of Ovingham on 30 July 1864 and was buried on 2 August 1864 at St Michael’s, Newburn, aged 52 years.
